Daily scooping vs full replacement
There are two separate jobs, and confusing them is where most people go wrong:
- Daily scooping — remove solid waste and urine clumps every day with a slotted scoop. This is what actually controls odour day to day.
- Full replacement — empty the entire tray, wash it, dry it and refill with fresh litter. This happens far less often, on a roughly monthly cycle.

Signs it's time to change
Don't just watch the calendar — watch the box. Do a full change sooner if you notice:
- Odour lingering even right after scooping
- Clumps starting to break apart instead of holding firm
- Litter looking damp, sticky or unusually dusty
- Your cat hesitating to use the box, or going elsewhere
Tips to make litter last longer
- Use the right depth. Fill to about 4 inches (10 cm). Too shallow and clumps stick to the base; too deep just wastes litter.
- Scoop every day. Consistent scooping is the single biggest factor in how long a fill stays fresh.
- Top up, don't overfill. Add a little fresh litter after scooping to keep the level steady.
